My Worst Nightmare
Levie's take on the comfort zone and my worst nightmare
What up people!
I had an incredible dinner last night. Some of my favorite dishes—beef tartare, pork belly, duck confit—at one of my favorite restaurants in town.
I’ll be thinking about it all day today. 🤤
Anyway let’s get down to business.
Entrepreneur: Adam Levie
Company: Box
Industry: Information Technology
Idea: “If you feel comfortable, you’re probably not doing it right.”
The comfort zone is a scary place.
Ironic right?
I mean it can feel pretty alright to me—which is what’s scary.
Comfort leads to complacency.
Complacency leads to a halted progress.
And a halted progress leads to… well you get the point.
Not a place I want to be.
So what’s the fix?
First a story.
I’m a fairly introverted person.
Introducing myself to a stranger sucks. I don’t like it.
As many of you know, I started a new job a while back.
My first task: a “fun fact scavenger hunt” where I had to meet all 42 people in the office and have a conversation about their fun fact.
I was mortified.
It was my actual worst nightmare.
But I distinctly remember taking a deep breath, saying screw it, and diving in head first to a conversation before my brain could shoot up any red flags.
It wound up being a super fun afternoon.
Plus I conquered a fear.
A win-win in my book.
And that’s the comfort zone key.
Get uncomfortable so fast you don’t have time to think otherwise.
