Nobody is born a CEO

Dropbox founder Drew Houston, an arguably natural entrepreneur, is quick to admit that running a company is a learned skill.

In a interview with Y Combinator, he tells Sam Altman “Nobody is born a CEO. You learn it.”

As with any role, there are certain skills and responsibilities necessary to succeed; however, it’s a lot less cut and dried as a CEO.

Houston continues, saying “the challenge is you just don’t know what your blind spots are. The chessboard is a lot bigger than just building a good product.”

There is no textbook. There are no rules. There will never be a one size fits all answer—what works for your company might not for another.

So what’s your best course of action? Trial and error.

Adaptability is your friend, especially when you’re the leader of a company.

In the same way you iterate and improve your product, so too should you iterate and improve yourself as a CEO.

You won’t get it perfect from the start, but show a willingness to grow as a person and your company will too.
