Choose Your Steak Wisely

Before you ever build a product you have to pick a market.

I’ve heard it a million times.

You’ve heard it a million times.

But how do we actually figure that out?

Caterina Fake, the founder of Flickr, has a quick and easy measure. It’s all about steak: solve a meaty problem.

If your market’s problem is a 6oz filet mignon, that’s no where near enough meat.

A 42oz A5 Wagyu Tomahawk Ribeye on the other hand is much more like it.

I don’t know how well you know steak, but a ribeye really has 3 distinct sections, the:

  • Fat Cap

  • Eye

  • Tail

Likewise, your market needs 3 distinct dimensions to it’s problem:

  • Depth

  • Severity

  • Urgency

If you can nail all 3, you’ll solve the juiciest issue your customers have ever had.

And they’ll be chomping at the bit to pay you for it.

Become a business butcher—choose your steak wisely.
